Outline of the Post

Applications are invited for a full-time, without-term Professor/Reader in Children’s Literature. We are particularly looking for applicants with research and teaching interests in reading, memory, oral history, and/or writing for children, complementary to those of staff in the National Centre for Children’s Literature (NCRCL) and in English literature more broadly. Roehampton has a growing international reputation for its work in both memory and reading.

The department is home of the AHRC-funded Memory Network, the AHRC-funded Memories of Fiction: An Oral History of Readers’ Life Stories, Prison Reading Groups and the award-winning NCRCL. We are seeking applications from highly motivated candidates who will be research leaders in their area with a track record of world class research, external research funding success, and collaborative external partnerships.

The post entails:

• carrying out and publishing, or producing in alternative format world-class or internationally excellent research
• contributing to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, including the supervision of research students
• actively engaging with external research-related organisations
• carrying out research-related enterprise activities where appropriate
• contributing to curriculum development
• applying for substantial external research grants
• providing research leadership (Professor) or contributing to research leadership (Reader)
• actively engaging with external research-related organisations
• representing and promoting the research of the Department or School in the University, national and international context
• providing research mentoring for colleagues
• contributing to administrative, managerial and committee work within the department and university, particularly in relation to research
• contributing to quality assurance and enhancement of all activities
• undertaking any other appropriate duties as requested by the Head of Department/School

The successful candidate will have:

• a PhD or professional doctorate in an appropriate subject area
• an extensive (Professor) or substantial (Reader) record of research and publication or other research outputs of world-class or internationally excellent quality;
• experience of teaching at university level
• a broad understanding of relevant fields and knowledge of current developments
• a commitment to providing learning and teaching that is research-led or research-informed
• research plans or other evidence of a vibrant and sustainable research trajectory at the forefront of the field

ASSISTANT and ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR, CHILDHOOD STUDIES.  The Department of Childhood Studies, Rutgers University—Camden, New Jersey, USA invites applications for two positions:  Assistant Professor (tenure-track) and Associate Professor (tenured) of Childhood Studies to commence on 1st September 2014.

Building on the strengths of its established, internationally recognized program, the Department seeks outstanding scholars whose research interests and projects address the lives or contexts of children and childhood from an interdisciplinary perspective.  All areas in the social sciences and humanities are welcome, including interdisciplinary fields such as performance studies, gender studies and disability studies. The disciplinary affiliation of an applicant is of less importance than the quality of his/her research and the demonstrated appreciation for multidisciplinary approaches to the study of children and childhood.  We are particularly interested in receiving applications from those whose work addresses the following areas, broadly conceived, and can speak to both national and transnational contexts: children’s sexualities, literacies, media, health behavior, geographies and disabilities.  We seek applicants with experience supervising doctoral students and interest in contributing to leadership roles within the department.

Established in 2007 as the first doctoral-granting granting program in childhood studies in the USA, the Department graduated its first Ph.D. students in May 2013. Childhood Studies offers a robust, multidisciplinary curriculum for BA, MA, and Ph.D. degrees.  The Department has hosted several major international conferences, sponsors an array of lectures and symposia, and annually welcomes visiting scholars from around the world. It enjoys an active faculty and graduate student body whose work often integrates scholarship with social engagement.

The School of Teaching & Learning is seeking a nine-month, full-time, tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor with a record of scholarship and a program of research with a focus on children’s and/or young adult literature. In particular we are looking for candidates engaged in systematic inquiry into the nature of children’s and/or young adult literature; how readers develop understandings of and interests in such literature; or the diverse contexts that support engagement with children’s and/or young adult literature. We seek a colleague with a background in children’s literature, young adult literature, library and information sciences, English education, or related fields, who is prepared to teach a range of children’s and/or young adult literature courses.

The School of Teaching and Learning has a commitment to scholarship, teaching, and service that emphasizes educational equity, diversity, and social justice. The School values collaborative scholarship among colleagues, and the person in this position will be expected to seek and establish strong ties with colleagues in and across the College and University, including the Ohio Resource Center, as well as with educators in local school districts.

Preferred Qualifications: experience employing advanced technologies in their teaching and scholarship; experience working in or with urban schools and communities, and who have experience as a teacher in K-12 settings.

Job Opportunity: Twentieth-Century Children’s Literature or Childhood Studies

The Department of English at the University of Pittsburgh anticipates a position as an Assistant Professor in Twentieth-Century Children’s Literature or Childhood Studies to begin Fall Semester, 2013, pending budgetary approval.

We seek candidates with both scholarly and teaching interests in the field of youth literature or culture who are keen to help us build our current Children’s Literature Program into a more interdisciplinary Childhood Studies Program. To that end, we welcome applications from twentieth- or twenty-first-century literature scholars whose work features a strong focus on childhood or adolescence, but also from scholars with commitments to other disciplines such as History, Art History, Sociology, Film, TV or Performance Studies, and so on. Children’s Literature scholars whose work cuts across historical periods are also encouraged to apply, especially those who specialize in picture books or young adult literature.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to teach undergraduate courses on children’s literature and culture as well as a wide range of other undergraduate literature courses and graduate seminars in his or her areas of scholarly interest. The teaching load is normally four courses per year. Salaries are competitive, and tenure is awarded for excellence in research, teaching and service. Candidates must have a PhD by September 1, 2013.
