The National Center for the Study of Children’s Literature
is proud to sponsor guest scholar Dr. Krystal Howard. Her lecture, “Form as
Political Resistance: The Verse Novel and the Education of the Young Poet” will
consider “the education of the young poet depicted in recently published verse
novels marketed to young people, including Jacqueline Woodson’s Brown Girl Dreaming (2014) and Kwame
Alexander’s Booked (2016).” She will also examine how “each
of these texts advocates for the value of stylistic imitation via the depiction
of children who write influence or erasure poems and engages directly with the
relationship between artistic creation and an artist’s environment.”
Dr. Krystal Howard is an Assistant Professor of
Children’s and Adolescent Literature in the Liberal Studies Program at
California State University, Northridge. She holds a PhD in English Literature
and an MFA in Poetry from Western Michigan University, as well as a BA in

research focuses on form and cultural studies in literature for young readers.
Her scholarship has appeared or is forthcoming in Children’s
Literature Association Quarterly, The Lion and the Unicorn, Graphic
Novels for Children and Young Adults, and Critical Insights: Neil
Gaiman, among others.
