2011: The Summer of Kate Slater

This summer I'll be heading to ChLA in June and IRSCL in July (with a side trip to Sydney, because hey, as long as I'm in Australia, why not do a little sight-seeing?). During July and August, I'll be in Los Angeles, teaching a creative writing course to gifted junior high students that focuses primarily on poetry, short stories and drama. Thanks to fellowship funding, I'm also planning on going to Guelph, Ontario to do some archival research in the L. M. Montgomery Collection.

2011: The Summer of Sean Printz

This summer I seem to be concentrating around the intersection of technology (specifically gaming technology) and literature. I'll actually be presenting a paper at ChLA about the use and construction of myth in video games, and I'm doing a lot of reading to prepare a class about visual texts that I will be teaching in the fall. It is a class where I will be integrating a lot of different types of media, trying to demonstrate the ways in which they intersect and diverge.

Other than that, I'm hoping to get a review done of the book Fairy Tales Reimagined: Essays on New Retellings.

Hope everybody is doing well

Kathleen Rushall Sees Controversy Starting: YA Novels & Backlash

Kathleen Rushall takes note of the following controversial article in the Wall Street Journal and wonders whether readers of Bruno Bettelheim have a response:

Amy Freeman, a 46-year-old mother of three, stood recently in the young-adult section of her local Barnes & Noble, in Bethesda, Md., feeling thwarted and disheartened.

She had popped into the bookstore to pick up a welcome-home gift for her 13-year-old, who had been away. Hundreds of lurid and dramatic covers stood on the racks before her, and there was, she felt, "nothing, not a thing, that I could imagine giving my daughter. It was all vampires and suicide and self-mutilation, this dark, dark stuff." She left the store empty-handed...

"And they're off." Responses begin to appear:

2011: The Summer of June Cummins

This summer I'll be going to the ChLA conference in Roanoke, where I'll be presenting a paper. In July, I'll go to New Jersey and New York to do research for my book. I'll also be traveling to attend big family life events (Bar Mitzvahs, 50th wedding anniversaries, etc.) Mostly, I'll be at my desk, working on the book and occasionally procrastinating by playing virtual word games.

2011: The Summer of Stephen Potts

In June I plan to finish a chapter I agreed to write for a book on the literary quest. My chapter focuses on the "fantasy quest," with particular attention to Pullman's His Dark Materials. Also in June, I have plans for a canoeing and rafting trip on the Green and Colorado Rivers in Canyonlands National Park, Utah. For the rest of the summer I will concentrate on finishing up the long-awaited revision of my book on Scott Fitzgerald's career as a popular writer. I will also be a guest at two popular culture conventions: San Diego's annual Comic-Con in July and the World Science Fiction Convention to be held this year in August in Reno NV, where I will participate in a day-long workshop on the teaching of science fiction.
